Dogs love to chew, and nothing beats settling in with a treat-filled frozen kong to keep dogs busy, mentally stimulated and happy! Kong toys are perfect for filling with delicious treats and freezing them into long lasting snacks. The recipes below are healthy, 100% dog-friendly (if in any doubt that your dog is allergic to any of the ingredients then substitute with something your dog is ok with!) Remember to feed these tasty snacks in moderation, and proper daily exercise will ensure your dog stays lean and healthy! For all of the following recipes, all you need to do is mix everything together, fill the Kong toy with the mixture and freeze it.

Some ingredients require cooking, but most of these recipes can utilize raw ingredients.

Blueberry Yoghurt

  • 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yoghurt.

  • 1 handful of fresh or frozen blueberries.

Peanut Butter and Cheese

  • 1 cup of cottage cheese.

  • 1 cup of organic crunchy peanut butter (must not contain xylitol).

  • 1 teaspoon of raw, local honey.

Sweet Potato, Turkey and Liver Bites

  • 2 small jars of turkey and sweet potato baby food

  • 1 cup of plain unsweetened yoghurt.

  • 1 handful of beef liver treats.

Cheesy Potato Pie

  • 1 cup of boiled white potato, chopped into small cubes.

  • 1/2 cup of shredded cheese.

  • 1/2 cup of plain cottage cheese.

Cookie Crunch

  • 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yoghurt.

  • 1 cup of plain cottage cheese.

  • 1 large handful of your dog's favourite cookies.

Coconut and Banana

  • 1 cup of mashed bananas.

  •  2 tablespoons of virgin, unrefined coconut oil.

  • 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yoghurt.

Peanut Butter Yoghurt Bites

  • 1 cup of crunchy organic peanut butter.

  • 1 cup of plain unsweetened yoghurt.

  • Small handful of dehydrated liver treats.

Apple Bobbing (especially for puppies, but fine for all dogs)

  • 1 or 2 cooking apples (depending on the size of your Kong)

  • 1tbsp water

  • 1tsp honey (less or none at all for senior dogs and dogs on a weight loss diet)

Peel and core the apples. Chop up the remaining flesh and put it in a pan along with the water to stew. Boil the mixture with a lid on for around 10mins, stirring occasionally, until its become soft. If you’re using honey, stir into the stewed apple. Allow the mixture to cool completely then use it to stuff your kong, then freeze.

Cheesy Treat (especially for puppies, but fine for all dogs)

  • Amount of normal dried food soaked in water to swell (amount depends on kong size)

  • 1 tablespoon grated cheese

Mix cheese with soft swelled dried food, pack kong and freeze

Deluxe Treat (especially for puppies, but fine for all dogs)

  • Cheddar cheese ripped apart into small pieces

  • 1 tbsp peanut butter

  • Thin slice of lunch meat ripped apart into small pieces

  • 1 banana, chopped

  • 1 tbsp of your dog’s favourite kibble

  • A little yoghurt (fruity or plain)

  • A dash of honey

  • One dog treat

Mix all the above fill your kong and freeze

Iced Tuna (especially for puppies, but fine for all dogs)

  • Tin of tuna (in water, not in brine or oil)

Stuff the kong with Tuna and freeze.

Honey Monster (especially for puppies, but fine for all dogs)

  • Clear honey

  • Dried apricots, diced

  • Apple

Dice the apple into small cubes.Put the honey into a saucepan and heat until it becomes runny. Then remove the pan from the heat, add in the diced apricots and apples and mix well. Allow the mix to cool a little before pouring into the kong with a bung in the small hole (such as tinfoil, you can remove it when it’s cooled). If it’s going into a container with large holes at both ends, such as a calcium bone, allow it to cool quite a lot first or it will pour right out again! You may find it easier to use a piping bag cut open at the end (ie without a nozzle) rather than pouring/spooning this sticky susbstance. Allow it to cool completely before giving to your dog

Sausage and Cheese (especially for puppies, but fine for all dogs)

  • Low fat cheese spread

  • Sausages (pork or beef, check that there aren’t any added ingredients which are not suitable for dogs)

Cook the sausages. Put the sausages and some cheese spread in a blender or food processor and mix for about 10 seconds.  Spoon into the kong and serve.
